Top 5 SNL Season 45 Performances

We’re going to rank the top five SNL musical performances of season 45. Over the decades, Saturday Night Live has brought us groundbreaking performances from David Bowie, Prince, the Beastie Boys and many more. Here’s our take on this season’s legends and up-and-comers.

5. DaBaby, “BOP” and “Suge”

Bringing in Da Baby was a stellar move by SNL, proving that the show still delivers artists with edge. This was was half performance art, half rapping. His bouncy yet somehow intimidating show left us wondering and wanting more. There were people doing handstands while twerking. HANDSTANDS WHILE TWERKING. Obviously DaBaby was going to have a great time on SNL, but no one expected this much of a show.

4. David Byrne, “Once in a Lifetime” and “Toe Jam”

The legendary singer-songwriter hasn’t lost a step since his Talking Heads days. His voice is as clear as ever, his music improves with age and at 68 years old, he still has more energy and style than most 30-somethings.. This show celebrated the end of his American Utopia shows with a joyful performance made all the better by his barefoot dancing band.

3. Harry Styles, “Lights Up” and “Watermelon Sugar”

We’ve played Fine Line more times than we can count. Harry brought his style A-game in a black sequined serpentine number and a watermelon suit. But that’s beside the point. It’s time to take Harry Styles very seriously as an artist and apparently as a comedian. “Lights Up” was subdued and introspective, while dance-able, funk-filled “Watermelon Sugar” played up Harry’s fruit fetish.

2. Billie Eilish, “bad guy” and “i love you”

It was a perfect way to open season 45. With the brilliant visual performance, “bad guy” was a marvel to watch as she walked on the walls of a rotating Grand Central Station. She had a lot of fun with this one, and it was a a blast to watch. While we weren’t expecting the solemn and beautiful “i love you” to follow, it was fantastic in a different way, showcasing her and Finneas’ ability to deliver powerful emotion.

1. Lizzo, “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell”

Of course Lizzo was on SNL. Of course she destroyed it. Was there any doubt? In the power-episode hosted by Eddie Murphy, you could tell Lizzo was feeling pure joy to be there. With her boundless, infectious enthusiasm, we were all smiles to see Lizzo do her Lizzo thing. With a guitar-singed rendition of “Truth Hurts” and the Christmas-themed performance of “Good as Hell”, she brought her freshest energy and we ate it up.
