“Savage (Remix)” Hits #1
It’s our second track review, and we are going to be covering Savage (Remix) by Megan thee Stallion featuring Beyoncé. At the time of writing, it’s the #1 song in America.
L: You and I have listened to this a few times and I love it. Beyoncé doesn’t do collaborations often, so tell me why this song got her attention.
C: Well, this song was already gaining traction on TikTok because of the viral dance and it was rising on the charts. It’s a song about being a savage and knowing it. So it makes sense that Beyoncé would relate.
L: Musically, what makes Megan thee Stallion unique?
C: Well, her rhymes are clever, her flow is extremely strong, and her charisma is overflowing.
L: That’s what I keep hearing about her: charisma, charisma, charisma. She and Lizzo put a huge smile on my face. Feels like they’re the only ones in the room.
C: Let’s talk about the song’s background. It is a track off of Megan’s EP Suga, released in early March of this year. Savage was released as a single in April after the viral TikTok dance. It was later announced that Beyoncé would be remixing the song, and said remix came out on April 29.
L: The depth Beyoncé brings to the song is incredible. It feels a poem over a super-percussive flow over jazz piano. The layers are so rich.
C: Absolutely. When I first heard the song, I liked it, but not too much. I felt like there was something missing, a complexity. Beyoncé added just that. The OKs in the chorus make the song more melodic and complete, along with many other aspects. She actually remixed the song! They didn’t just add in a feature, they weaved Beyoncé throughout the whole thing.
L: Exactly. She had a completely new vision for the song. Let’s get into the lyrics. I actually like the fact that this is song doesn’t pretend to be lyrically deep — it’s just big, loud, wall-to-wall self esteem. The depth is in the music. Anyone can have fun singing this song, but no one else could’ve made it. These women are especially talented. Beyoncé, of course, is superhuman.
C: I agree. My favorite line is “Please don’t give me hype, write my name in ice, I can’t argue with these lazy b****es, I just raised my price,” I just really love Beyoncé’s delivery and ferocity. It’s cool to see rap Beyoncé kill it yet again. The verses are classy, bougie and ratchet.
L: We’re all reaching for something that feels good right now. Thanks for making sure I heard it.
Rating Scale: If “Cash S**t” is a Megan thee Stallion 10/10, “Savage (Remix)” is a 9.5/10 (or a 10).
