my future Track Review
We are back and finally reviewing my future by Billie Eilish! It’s been out for a couple weeks now and since she has one of our favorite albums of the past few years, it’s time to give this song a proper listen.
L: The most striking thing to me is her vocals. I can’t help but hear Melody Gardot as an influence here (or at least I hope so). There’s something about the way she finishes her notes, her voice seems to melt away rather than stop.
C: Absolutely. There’s definitely a haunting quality to her voice. Let’s talk about the lyrics. This track is about independence and wanting to know and love yourself. That’s not an original theme in and of itself, but the way she approaches it through the angle of being in love with your future is interesting.
L: Right. You and I both love one line in particular: Know I’m supposed to be unhappy without someone, but aren’t I someone? She sings that with such delicacy, and yet it’s the crux of the song. Looking solely at the lyrics, this could just as easily been a bouncy pop song a la Taylor Swift or Katy Perry.
C: Totally, and what makes it stick out is that she didn’t do that, she made a slow jazz-R&B song (using the term loosely). Moving on, I enjoyed this song more once the beat picked up. In the beginning, I thought it was just a little too monochromatic. The beat adds some momentum to the sad self-reflection, but overall, I’m a little underwhelmed by this single.
L: Yep. I fully admit that the first part made me a little sleepy. But I do like the song and hope this is a sign of things to come. (Ahem, new album.)
Ratings Scale: If wish you were gay is a Billie Eilish 10/10, this is a 6/10.
