Leave the Door Open Track Review
Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak have released their debut single as Silk Sonic, from their upcoming project. Today we’re going to give it a review.
C: There is so much to love about this slow jam, starting with the fact that they are fully committed to this Silk Sonic vibe. They really sell it, primarily with Bruno’s hysterical backup vocals.
L: This is the first pop song I’ve been excited about in months. From the opening cascade — complete with bells — Leave the Door Open conjures up every 80s R&B song I grew up with. Their voices complement each other, and because lines like “I look too good to be alone” are true to both artists’ styles, it feels like a true collaboration.
C: When I first heard it, I immediately thought of 24K Magic, and it’s abundantly clear that Bruno’s style is sort of confined to retro jams. I was not a huge fan of that album, but I think you’re right in that Anderson makes this track feel less vanilla.
L: With “sip sip, drip drip” and “house clean, pool warm,” I actually don’t see it as vanilla at all, I see it as an over-the-top, comical production that I haven’t heard in a long time. So while in other artists’ hands, this song might be a little too silky, they manage to give it style and charm.
C: I totally can see that, because there is so much personality woven into the song, but I just think it’s a bit of a safe bet. However, it’s just an absolute joy to listen to, and in the end that’s what matters.
L: I’m excited to hear the rest of the album, I adore Anderson .Paak, and Bruno always sounds like he’s having a blast.
C: Yes! I think the album is gonna be great. If this is what it sounds like, it’s gonna be 50 minutes of listening to liquid gold.
